mwgwmwhaTesem (mwhq = mwiamwiqtsm) è una mwigrazza canina del tipo mwiwlevriero in uso nell'mwjaAntico Egitto. Il nome significava, genericamente, "mwjqcane da caccia". Le raffigurazioni dell'epoca, ce lo presentano come un cane slanciato, magro, con coda arricciata verso il dorso ed orecchie lunghe, appuntite e diritte. Non si trattava dell'unico cane del tipo levriero in uso agli egizi, dato che non mancano anche raffigurazioni di levrieri del tipo mwjgSalukicite-ref-royalhunt-2-0[2] che, ed a partire dalla mwkwXVIII dinastia, monopolizzano l'iconografia a discapito del Tesemcite-ref-gold106-3-0[3].

Due razze canine moderne, il mwmqPharaon Houndcite-ref-4[4] ed il mwngCirneco dell'Etnacite-ref-5[5] sarebbero, secondo alcuni mwowcinologi dei discendenti moderni del Tesem, ma è semplicemente più probabile che si tratti di razze morfologicamente simili a quella estinta per una mera casualità. Ancora da approfondire è invece la possibile continuità genetica tra l'antico Tesem egiziano ed il mwpaBasenji, razza semi-selvatica diffusa in mwpqAfrica Centralecite-ref-ras-1-1[1].

Storia

L'mwsgiconografia monumentale mwswegizia raffigura tre tipologie di cani: il mwtamolossoide, il mwtqlevriero ed il mwtgcane pariahcite-ref-6[6]. Gli studiosi declinano poi il "levriero egiziano" in due distinte tipologiecite-ref-gold106-3-1[3]: il Tesem, più antico, ed il mwvwSalukicite-ref-7[7].

Si suppone che il Tesem sia stato selezionato a partire dai cani pariahcite-ref-gold93-8-0[8] nel mwyqSud dell'Antico Egitto, tra la mwygNubia ed il mwywPuntcite-ref-blench-9-0[9]cite-ref-10[10], nel cosiddetto mwbaPeriodo Predinastico: una raffigurazione del Tesem, databile al mwbq3000 a.C. figura infatti a mwbgNaqadacite-ref-bard-11-0[11]. Il Tesem comparve tra i soggetti raffigurati nella tomba di mwcwCheopecite-ref-cunliffe-12-0[12] (regno 2609–2584 a.C.)cite-ref-13[13]: il cane (anche noto come il "Cane di Cheope" agli mwfaegittologi), nello specifico, viene raffigurato con tanto di specifica del suo nome, "Akbaru", e raffigurato con un collarecite-ref-cunliffe-12-1[12]. Le raffigurazioni del Tesem proseguono per tutto il mwgqMedio Regno (2055-1555 a.C.) ma a partire dal mwggNuovo Regno vengono sostituiti dai Saluki ad orecchie pendenti e coda non arricciatacite-ref-gold93-8-1[8].

Aspetto

Le caratteristiche morfologiche principali del Tesem erano la coda arricciata sul dorsocite-ref-naville-14-0[14] e le lunghe orecchie diritte e appuntitecite-ref-blench-9-1[9]. Le raffigurazioni pittoriche egizie ce li presentano come di pelliccia giallognola e di taglia superiore a quella dei cani pariah. Le proporzioni corporee sono simili a quelle dei levrieri ma non così ben definite: nell'insieme il Tesem rassomiglia più ad un mwkqterrier snello che non ad un vero e proprio levrierocite-ref-15[15].
